Interwoven Histories
Hampton University & Native History

From 1878 to 1923, Hampton University aimed to assimilate over 1,400 Native students from 66 tribal nations—many were former prisoners from Fort Marion. While this was a dark era of forced assimilation, Hampton was unique in educating Native and African American students together. Despite the hardships, it became a space where cultures intersected, and resilience thrived.
